These magic period photos are thanks to Peter Walker, who was present at the inaugural race meeting held at Wakefield Park back in 1994.
The meeting was held by the HSRCA in November 1994, after Paul Samuels and John Carter opened the circuit for motor sport. It attracted 240 entries in nine grids, as well as a healthy crowd of spectators.
Peter’s images feature several club members as well as several cars that are still active in the club today. The Caterham NUH-448 is at the hands of Mike Basquil, and was his first sports car (bought from Alan Shing who bought it from original builder and CLA member Bob Merkenhof) following Peter in his yellow Elan.

I remember the day well, there was a cruise down to Goulburn in the cool of the dawn my first real experience of top down motoring. The cars there were fantastic I will never forget the sound and smell of the ERA being warmed up. As an aside the Vauxhall’s on display one of those was restored by Greg Mackie I think that is him in the photo( we hadn’t meet at the time). Then on the way home we got caught in the mother of a thunderstorm and got drenched through was a great day.

Red Elite was then Brian Caldersmith’s. White Elite I am fairly certain is Bruce Mansell in Lurch. Both cars were at the 25th Anniversary celebrations in November 2019.
